Cape Union Mart is South Africa’s favourite outdoor adventure store, and has been equipping South African adventurers from 1933. Its retail outlets include: Cape Union Mart, Keedo Kids, Old Khaki, Poetry, Tread and Miller.
The IT team shared with us that the retailer was planning to launch a new Point of Sale system.
With 250 retail outlets all over South Africa, as well as in Namibia and Botswana totalling a whopping 2000+ in-store employees; the team was worried about how to introduce the change and prepare all employees for the big day their store would “go live” onto the new system.
The IT team needed a solution, and they knew it needed to include:
- Change management. The employees needed to be aware that a new Point of Sale system was coming, and we needed to get them excited about the change.
- Brief, high quality content. A course that taught employees everything they needed to know, in a time effective manner to have minimal disruption to business.
- Effective assessment. They needed to know that an employee was fully ready & able to operate the new system.
- Mistakes would impact the store’s ability to trade, so only those that completed the course and met the assessment standards would be allowed access on go live day.

- Incredible support. With a workforce that changes daily, they needed hands on, real time service to help them get each store’s team to complete their training before their scheduled go live date.
They chose to partner with Brain eBox, and we worked together to:
- Design and develop change management communications videos to help stores prepare for the change & get excited about the journey ahead.
- Design and develop the POS course. We provided the CUM team with a framework to use to provide us with the POS rules, processes and tips.
- We then transformed this into an eLearning course.

- Design their online classroom, using their logo & corporate colours.
- Deliver the Point of Sale course.
- We helped their employees complete the course from login to course completion, providing detailed reporting to the IT team daily so that we could help them have full sight of the course progress as each set of stores turned on the new system.
And the result?
“Having never used eLearning on any projects, I was nervous about how the end users would respond to the method. The overall feedback was incredibly positive.” Head of PMO
We achieved a 99.3% course completion rate, and the new Point of Sale system was introduced into all retail outlets with no business disruption.
Employees felt prepared and ready on the day of the change, and it was business as usual even though it really was not a usual business day!
And today?
After 1 year of working together, we have continued to deliver the Point of Sale course to new employees as part of their induction process into the business.
“I am so pleased with their outputs that I am using them for another upcoming project” Head of PMO
Media24 is Africa’s largest digital publishing business.
The HR Manager shared with us that on an annual basis HR was required to release information to employees regarding the company benefits they were eligible to receive.
The purpose of this was to help employees to be able to identify and understand the benefits available to them, so that they could make an informed decision regarding which benefits they wish to access.
In the past this information had been shared in infographic format which was well received by the business.
But, HR felt that they wanted to digitise this information even further by creating a communications video which would help employees to identify and understand the benefit offering.
They chose to partner with Brain eBox, and we worked together to:
- Outline a “storyboard” which captured all of the information that was required to be shared with employees.
- Design an animated video to communicate the information, making sure to incorporate their company logo, colours and correct language was utilised throughout.
And the result?
The communication was well received by the business and more employees than before engaged with the information being shared on company benefits.
“The business enjoyed the fresh approach to “HR Communication” and we drew 3.37% more employees to the HR site compared to prior years. Indeed an exciting story to tell and we will embark on more “video comms” going forward.” – HR Manager
And today?
After 2 years of working together, we support Media24 to keep their communications video current through annual updates, when this is needed.
On the Dot is South Africa’s biggest multichannel media logistics company.
The company has over 800 employees and a footprint in all provinces of South Africa.
The HR Manager shared with us that getting their training to their employees out in the field was one of their key business challenges.
The Induction Programme was especially tricky, because the completion of induction by new employees is an audit item against the HR team’s performance is measured.
But it was becoming increasingly difficult to get business buy-in to take critical employees out of their jobs and into a classroom to complete the induction programme.
Employees were also not keen to attend Induction especially when they had been in the business for a few weeks. They didn’t feel like the training was relevant to them, they were hardly “new” anymore!
And on top of that, the trainer felt that their slide deck approach was not as engaging a welcome as it could be.
The HR team needed a solution, and they knew it needed to be:
- Mobile friendly. Many of their employees are on the road, out of office and needed to receive their training “on the go”
- Light on data. Because employees would be accessing the course on the go, it needed to not demolish the employee’s monthly data allowance
- User friendly. Many of their employees were not required to use computers or applications every day, so they needed a solution that would be easy to use
- Cost effective. With above average labour turnover levels, they needed a payment model that was not going to break the bank.
- Great support. With a small HR team, they wanted a solution that would ease their load, and not provide them with additional administrative and reporting headaches.
